4 Tips for Purchasing Your First Car

4 Tips for Purchasing Your First Car

Shopping for a new car is an exciting occasion – one made even more so if it's your very first car.

Amidst all of this excitement, however, it can be easy both to let your better judgment slip in the spur of the moment, and to get overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of the situation at hand. Purchasing a car, after all, is no small transaction.

In reality, there are a lot of things to consider when purchasing a vehicle that you, especially never having owned a vehicle before, may not be familiar with.

In order to help keep your first-car-hunt as enjoyable and successful as possible, we have put together a list of, what we believe, are the top 4 tips for purchasing your first car.

#1.Know Your Needs and Your Budget

First of all: if you don't know what you want or need, you are going to become overwhelmed and frustrated really easily and really quickly. Make a list of what specific aspects you are looking for in your new vehicle and what you are going to be using it for.

Second: looking at anything that is out of your budget never ends well. Either you will cave and purchase something you really can't afford (just a bad idea), or you will find something you love but can't have (cue disappointment). Give yourself a set budget before you even begin looking.

#2.Consider Additional Costs

This budget we mentioned above should include more than just the cost of the vehicle, because it isn't only going to be your monthly payments you'll have to worry about once you've made your purchase.

A few of the additional costs you should look at can include:

●Fuel costs and the fuel efficiency of the vehicles you consider

●The auto insurance coverage you will need. Tip - some makes and models of cars are cheaper to ensure than others.

●Monthly and yearly maintenance and general upkeep costs

#3.Take It For A Proper Test Drive

When we say test drive, we don't mean take it for a loop around the block and call it good. A proper test drive is about ensuring that all parts of the car function in a way that suits your needs and expectations.

Before you even begin driving the car, check out details such as available storage space, seat adjustments, and the electronics – you'd be surprised at how frustrating some of these aspects can be if they are different than what you are used to. Ensure you find a vehicle where these accessories are comfortable for you.

Once you are actually test-driving, drive the way you would on any given day (minus the speeding, maybe). What we mean is: take it through a busy parking lot or try parallel parking to test the maneuverability; or take it out onto the highway and test out the acceleration and speed handling. These are important aspects of a vehicle that you won't see from a short drive around the block.

#4.Learn How to Negotiate

Just because the price sticker says one thing, doesn't mean that number is set in stone. Whether you are purchasing a used vehicle from a private seller or a new vehicle from a dealership – you can negotiate the price.

Use these tips to learn how to negotiate like a pro and you could shave thousands off the price of your new car.

Most importantly – have fun!

Purchasing your first car is a big milestone. Don't spend the entire process stressing, worrying, or overthinking it.

If you follow these 4 tips, you will end up with the perfect vehicle for yourself and your needs as a positive experience to look back on.
